Fresh bakery items sit right alongside the groceries — in a village of a few hundred people, that's not a luxury, it's how a proper general store has always worked.

The village staple

A hundred-year-old building.
A sixty-year-old store.

Before it sold its first loaf of bread, the building on Bayview Drive had already been a dance hall, a hotel and a wartime warehouse. Not many stores anywhere can say that.

early 1920s

Bert Drader builds the hall — gaming rooms, a dance floor, the busiest room in a young logging village.
the depression years

The hall is sold and finds new work — a hotel and café under Frank Pearce, keeping travellers fed on the inlet.
the war years

The building is pressed into service as a timber-supply warehouse during the Second World War.
the post-war years

Ernie and Maureen Chapman restore it as a grocery; the Shymanski family later establish it as Bayview Market.
today

The Lore family keeps the store going — one of the oldest remaining grocery stores anywhere on Haida Gwaii.
